The Fall of 2003 was another great season for elk on the 5 E Ranch. We called in
a 6X6 satellite bull, the shooter made an excellent 23 yard shot; the bull did not
know he was hit, walked 20 feet and fell over dead! In late October the elk began
to "herd up" into a herd of 100+ animals. The first week of November marked the "second"(or
perhaps the "third" bugle) which occurs when cows not bred in September come into
heat again. It was amazing to watch the rutting activities begin all over again,
this time in a large herd with several bulls fighting, lots of bugling and cow calling!
It makes one look forward with excitement for the Fall of 2004!
